System of a Down es el primer disco de la banda armenia, que se formo en california System Of A Down lanzado en 1998 por American Recordings. La portada del álbum pertenece a la mano del artista John Heartfield del partido comunista de Alemania durante el tercer Reich, el texto en el poster original dice: "5 fingers has a hand! With these 5 grab the enemy!" (en español dice: "5 dedos tiene una mano! con estos 5 agarrarare al enemigo!") de ese slogan la banda se inspiro para poner en la parte de atras del álbum "The hand has five fingers, capable and powerful, with the ability to destroy as well as create"( en español dice: " la mano tiene 5 dedos capaces y poderosos, con la habilidad de destruir como de crear") luego mas marcado dice en negrita "Open your eyes, open your mouths, close your hands and make a fist" ( en español dice: " Abre tus ojos, abre tu boca, cierra tu mano y haz un puño), luego todo el resto de la parte de atras del CD esta en mayuscula menos el titulo de la canción "CUBErt" y el logo de "COLUMBIA American".
El álbum gano disco de oro por la RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) en febrero del 2000, 2 años después sacan su segundo disco Toxicity que gano el disco de platino. Contiene los singles Sugar, War? y Spiders. La banda terminó el 1998 en un meritorio puesto 124 en el Billboard para tratarse de un disco debut.
